FLOW-3D can model immiscible fluids such as oil and water and can accurately track a distinct interface between the components relative to the open environment (surrounding air). Fluids can mix freely due to the dynamics affecting the entire domain. Over time, the fluids separate again based on a drift relation between a continuous and a dispersed phase.
The performance of gravity separators can be improved with CFD modeling:
- Develop vessel inlet configurations to improve uniformity of gas and liquid flows and avoid mixing of oil & water due to wave-induced sloshing
- Determine the influence of internal equipment on hydraulic efficiency and separation performance
- Gauge the effects of changes in operating conditions
- Accurately model small-scale phenomena (multi-phase flows, drops, particles, bubbles)
