Advanced Training Sessions

In conjunction with the FLOW-3D World Users Conference 2022, advanced training sessions will be held the afternoon of May 16, 2022 at the conference hotel. Taught by senior technical staff and experts in their fields, advanced training sessions include Version Up seminars for FLOW-3D CASTFLOW-3D AMFLOW-3D HYDRO and FLOW-3D as well as a FLOW-3D POST session focused on best practice workflows and commonly-asked support questions. The courses are scheduled so that everyone, regardless of their application, can participate in the FLOW-3D POST training session. All training sessions cost 100 €, and training fees are waived for presenters. You can sign up for multiple training sessions when you register online.

The FLOW-3D training session will focus on the following advanced topics in fluid flow modeling: a new log-conformation tensor approach for the solution of visco-elastic fluid flows, advances in two-phase flow modeling, improvements to the VOF method using a new VOF-to-particle model, expanded Active Simulation Control using sampling volumes, non-Newtonian fluids with training on Herschel Bulkley fluids, and using 2D tables to characterize complex fluid properties, for example where the viscosity is a function of both temperature and strain rate.

This training session is geared towards FLOW-3D AM users as well as those interested in exploring the powerful capabilities of FLOW-3D AM for simulating additive manufacturing and laser welding processes. An overview of how to integrate FLOW-3D AM with FLOW-3D (x) and cloud-based HPC resources will showcase how batch simulations with different process parameters can be run in an automated manner with the goal of process optimization. Next, Python’s interoperability with FLOW-3D POST and FLOW-3D (x) is leveraged to extract simulation data to help build process maps for melt pool dimensions, temperature gradients and cooling rates.

The FLOW-3D HYDRO session covers four development topics: the new cutcell method, a simplified axial pump model, the new dissolved oxygen model, and 2D tables that are used to characterize complex fluid property dependencies. In addition, we will explore how FLOW-3D HYDRO and FLOW-3D POST can be integrated into the FLOW-3D (x) workflow for automated parameter studies, optimization and postprocessing.

This one-hour FLOW-3D CAST training course will begin with an introductory overview and a review of the new features and GUI design changes in FLOW-3D CAST v5.1. Through examples, new workspaces will be covered in detail, including Investment Casting, Continuous, Sand Core Making, Centrifugal as well as the new Exothermic Sleeve capabilities and database. We will also discuss the new chemistry-based solidification model available in FLOW-3D CAST v5.1.

Creating Optimal Workflows with FLOW-3D POST

This training session is intended for all users of FLOW-3D products, regardless of application.

Powered by the ParaView engine, FLOW-3D POST provides modelers with superior analysis capabilities within an intuitive postprocessing interface. Training will begin with a review of the workflow that users are encouraged to adopt for effective postprocessing. In the second part of the training, we will review and answer the most common support questions we have received since FLOW-3D POST was released in early 2021. The third part of the training will focus on implementing batch postprocessing in order to automate analysis and visualization workflow.

FLOW-3D World Users Conference 2022 to take place in Munich, Germany

Santa Fe, NM, February 15, 2022 — Flow Science, Inc. will hold the FLOW-3D World Users Conference 2022 on May 16-18, 2022 at the Maritim Hotel in Munich, Germany. Co-hosted by Flow Science Deutschland, this year’s conference features application-specific tracks, advanced training sessions, in-depth technical customer presentations, and the latest product developments presented by Flow Science’s senior technical staff. Attendees will also enjoy a tour of the BMW Museum as part of the conference’s social events.

Hubert Lang of BMW will be this year’s keynote speaker. Hubert Lang has worked in BMW’s Light Metal Foundry in Landshut, Germany since 1998. Introduced to FLOW-3D’s metal casting capabilities in 2005, Lang has led the expansion of BMW’s use of FLOW-3D. Today BMW uses FLOW-3D for a wide range of metal casting processes and special projects. Lang will showcase some of BMW’s innovative designs for which FLOW-3D has played an indispensable role.

We’re looking forward to an informative and fun conference in Munich. This year’s conference is particularly meaningful to us as we reunite with our customers and partners around the world to share and celebrate their technical successes and contributions to society. We’re so glad to finally be able to see everyone after so long apart. We are also very pleased to welcome our keynote speaker Hubert Lang to honor our 17 years of partnership with BMW, said Dr. Amir Isfahani, CEO of Flow Science.

The call for abstracts is now open. Customers are encouraged to share their experiences, present their success stories, case studies and validations, and obtain valuable feedback from their peers and Flow Science staff. Topics include metal casting, additive manufacturing, laser welding, civil & municipal hydraulics, micro/nano/bio fluidics, aerospace, and automotive applications. The deadline to submit an abstract is Friday, March 18.

Advanced training sessions for FLOW-3D’s family of products will be offered as part of the conference. Taught by senior technical staff and experts in their fields, advanced training sessions include Version Up seminars for FLOW-3D CAST, FLOW-3D AM, FLOW-3D HYDRO and FLOW-3D, as well as a FLOW-3D POST session focused on best practice workflows and commonly asked support questions. Principal Responsibilities and Key Requirements

CFD engineers work at the intersection of classical physics, numerical methods, and computer science. We apply our expertise in these fields to help clients solve complex real-world engineering problems, teach applied CFD, and guide our development teams to create new models that grow our capabilities and application areas. This challenging and dynamic role requires the following skills to be successful:

  • An engineering degree from an ABET or equivalently accredited university and some work experience
    • MS degree (mechanical, aerospace, or chemical engineering preferred) and engineering internship experience OR
    • BS degree (mechanical, aerospace, or chemical engineering preferred) and 2+ years of engineering work experience
  • Candidates with 5+ years of experience using commercial CFD code in industry can be considered for the Senior CFD Engineer position.
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals, particularly fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and solid mechanics
  • Excellent oral communication, technical writing, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to comfortably navigate a diverse, multicultural environment
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Common sense and an unending desire to learn

Senior CFD Engineer

  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience to be considered for this role
  • 2+ years work experience in a formal software development environment
  • 2+ years of project or people management experience

Preferred Skills and Experience

Exceptional CFD engineers usually draw heavily on the following skills and experience:

  • 2+ years of relevant industry or academic experience (e.g., additive manufacturing, propellant management design, slosh analysis, consumer product processing, coating, analysis of complex fluids, etc.)
  • Experience with FEA or other numerical analysis
  • Experience with experimental setups and data analysis
  • Experience with 3D CAD
  • Programming experience (FORTRAN and Python)
  • Demonstrated initiative in work projects
  • EIT certification
  • Demonstrated ability to distill information into clear requirements
  • Experience working on software development projects or interfacing with software development teams, especially for engineering analysis software
  • Knowledge of Agile methods and tools

Dr. Flender Holding GmbH, owner of MAGMA Giessereitechnologie GmbH and SIGMA Engineering GmbH, acquired 100% of the shares of Flow Science, Inc. in December 2021.

At Flow Science we solve the world’s toughest CFD problems involving free surface flows, turbulence, heat transfer and fluid-structure interaction. We are looking for a creative and motivated individual to join our R&D team to work on our flagship CFD software FLOW-3D.        

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

High Performance Computing

  • Parallelize physical and numerical models for the FLOW-3D solver
  • Identify performance bottlenecks, research, and implement new technologies that improve the efficiency and performance of the solver
  • Assist in resolving solver bugs reported by users
  • Assist in verification and validation of the solution
  • Conceptualize, organize, plan, test and help implement designs for HPC cloud environment
  • Assist existing users with running on the cloud
  • Assist the sales team in getting new users up and running on the cloud
  • Test FLOW-3D products on new HPC cloud platforms

Continuous Integration and V&V

  • Maintain the current CI system and assist in migrating to a newer system
  • Daily monitoring and reporting of testing failures
  • Identify opportunities for automation and implement them
  • Maintain the V&V test suite and help with its expansion
  • Learn and maintain internal productivity and debugging tools

Required Experience and Skills

  • An engineering degree from an ABET or equivalently accredited university and some work experience
    • BS degree (engineering/applied math/computer science) with 3 years of relevant experience, OR
    • MS degree (engineering/applied math/computer science) with relevant experience, OR.
    • PhD degree (engineering/applied math/computer science) with relevant experience is required.
  • Required experience for HPC responsibilities
    • Programming using the Message Passing Interface (MPI) library on large codes.
    • HPC cluster experience (must be comfortable with Linux environment)
    • Shell scripting (bash, perl, python, Windows batch)
    • Debugging tools (gdb, valgrind, ITAC) and performance analysis tools (Intel Vtune Amplifier, Arm MAP, Open|SpeedShop).
    • HPC development for cloud platforms
  • Preferred experience for CI and V&V responsibilities
    • Know-how of CI system
    • Scripting with python
    • Version control systems (SVN/Git)
    • Sphinx documentation
  • Programming experience with modern Fortran/C
  • Excellent communication, technical writing, and interpersonal skills to work seamlessly within and across our diverse, multicultural teams
