How to Add Flow Tracers in FLOW-3D and FLOW-3D Cast
Flow tracers, recently implemented in FLOW-3D, track fluid motion and location with respect to time. In fluid experiments, tracers can be defined as dye to enhance flow visualization. In both FLOW-3D and FLOW-3D Cast, the capability to add tracers anywhere in the domain allows the user to better visualize flow patterns. Two commercial applications where flow tracers are valuable are metal casting and hydraulics; however, tracers can be used for many other applications. This "Hints and Tips" article will provide a discussion of the process for examples in casting (using FLOW-3D Cast) and hydraulics (using FLOW-3D), instructions on how to implement tracers, and how to present the tracer data.
