Amir Isfahani, FLOW-3D Developer
Amir Isfahani, a member of the FLOW-3D Development Team, was recently recognized with the 2012 Stanley I. Weiss Outstanding Thesis Award. In his dissertation, he conducted a comprehensive study of interactions between flowing red blood cells and a white blood cell (leukocyte) adhered to the vessel wall in response to inflammation. He investigated the forces exerted on the wall-bound leukocyte and showed that the presence of the individual red cells significantly increases the hydrodynamic forces that the leukocyte experiences relative to a homogeneous Newtonian assumption of blood flow. This award recognizes a Theoretical and Applied Mechanics student for an outstanding MS or PhD thesis. Amir earned his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
