Hot off the Press: FLOW-3D Reveals the History of the Hydraulic Sciences
Charles Ortloff, an expert in the hydraulic sciences and a long-time FLOW-3D user has written a book, "Water Engineering in the Ancient World: Archaeological and Climate Perspectives on Societies of Ancient South America, Meso-America, the Middle East and South East Asia."
According to Oxford University Press, “[Charles] uses the latest computing methods [FLOW-3D et al.] to understand water resource problems and solutions developed in ancient civilizations.” Charles is a Research Associate in the Department of Anthropology, University of Chicago. This book can be ordered through amazon.com or directly from Oxford University Press.

Fluid flow problems often involve free surfaces in complex geometry and in many cases are highly transient. Examples in hydraulics are flows over spillways, in rivers, around bridge pilings, flood overflows, flows in sluices, locks, and a host of other structures. A capability to computationally model these types of flows is attractive if such computations can be done accurately and with reasonable computational resources. To be useful, simulations should be much faster and less expensive than using physical models. Read more about Simulating Fluid Flows with Free Surfaces in this new CFD 101 section.
