New Platforms Added for FLOW-3D/MP Version 3.0
You won't have to leave it running
with FLOW-3D/MP v3.0.
Flow Science recently beefed up the platform alternatives for its distributed-memory version of FLOW-3D. We've added Windows 64 support on Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 and added support for Infiniband network connections in clusters for RedHat Linux RHEL v3. In addition, all supported platforms now have both single-precision as well as double-precision version options.
The full platform line-up for FLOW-3D/MP Version 3.0 is:
- RHEL v3 or higher for both 32-bit and 64-bit processors, with Gigabit Ethernet network interconnects.
- RHEL v3 or higher for 64-bit processors, with Infiniband® network interconnects.
- Suse Enterprise 9 or higher for 64-bit processors, with Gigabit Ethernet network interconnects.
- Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 for 64-bit processors, with Gigabit Ethernet network interconnects.

CFD is increasingly being used to model and optimize microfluidic systems. Success of a microfluidic device depends on its ability to accurately control micro-scale fluid volumes. These devices rely on a combination of hydrodynamic and/or electrohydrodynamic (direct charge, electrophoresis and dielectrophoresis) forces. FLOW-3D’s multi-physics solver is capable of solving processes that simultaneously involve fluid flow, heat transfer, phase change, centrifugal forces and electrohydrodyamic interactions. At the same time FLOW-3D can solve for rigid body motion and deformation of structures like membranes and flexing walls in a fully coupled manner. This presentation will show many microfluidic processes and devices that FLOW-3D simulates, including joule heating, multiphase flows, micro-valves, micro-pumps, micro-mixers and lab on a chip.
The presentation will last 20 to 30 minutes with 15 minutes after for Q & A.

On May 28th, users from around Europe gathered in the beautiful south German university town of Tübingen to listen to and learn from interesting presentations about their applications of FLOW-3D to real-world problems. The 8th European FLOW-3D Users Conference was hosted by Flow Science’s distributor of FLOW-3D in Germany, CFD Consultants GmbH.
Conference attendees heard presentations covering hydraulics applications (Ghent University and Universität Wuppertal), casting uses (Hydro Aluminium and Schaufler Tooling) and foam molding (Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg). In addition, Intelligent Light demonstrated the advantages of post-processing FLOW-3D results with its FIELDVIEW software.
Flow Science’s Vice President of Research and Development, Dr. Michael Barkhudarov discussed the upcoming new release version 9.3 of FLOW-3D and previewed upcoming developments. Flow Science’s president, Tom Jensen, addressed benchmarking information on FLOW-3D’s cluster version, FLOW-3D/MP, version 3.0.
FLOW-3D Workshop Held at Hydrovision
Hydrovision 2008, held in Sacramento, CA in July 2008, was a very well attended conference, with the biggest attendance to date. Flow Science and Alden Research hosted a free half-day workshop, "Utilizing CFD in the Design of Hydraulic Structures." There was a lot of interest with over 100 registrants. The topics were many, including: Why model flow in 3D; Applications for CFD in the Hydraulics industry; Validation studies; Three successful projects; A product demonstration; and an advanced model discussion.
