Judging from the news media, it seems that a great many people are addicted to gambling. Particularly, gambling using computers. Of course, we don't want our FLOW-3D customers to feel they are in any sense gambling when they use our software. On the other hand, there are some useful analogies; for example, we prefer that our users always feel they are holding a winning hand when using FLOW-3D.
In this issue of the News there are several articles that will get a gambler's blood flowing. For instance, when do you hold or discard cards that may be worthless in an otherwise good hand? If you are absolutely sure they won't be of use then clearly they should be discarded. This is the point of the article on Unstructured Memory Allocation. If portions of a computing mesh are not required for a particular computation, then discarding those portions can result in a significant saving in both computing time and memory usage. Clearly, this is a winning strategy, one that will be available in the next release of FLOW-3D.
Should you raise or call? Putting more in the pot is risky, but the payout is greater. When to stay with a low-order advection method or when to gamble on a higher-order method, as described in this issue, illustrates this point. Raising CPU costs by using higher-order methods can often result in greater payoffs.
Finally, everyone who attended the 2006 FLOW-3D World Users Conference was a winner. Attendees had a full house to meet and compare their experiences, were able to shuffle between advanced training classes and cashed in on reviews of new features coming in FLOW-3D Version 9.2. Users gave brilliant presentations that told of their grand slams with FLOW-3D covering a variety of applications. See the article on improving river velocity measurements for an example.
