Staff Profile: Robin Berry
Captain Robin in the Virgin Islands
Title: Vice President of Finance and Human Resources (along with many other hats)
Education: I have been educating myself my entire life – from a store-front business school thirty years ago to taking bridge lessons at the local community college. Somewhere along the way I earned a CPA in Accounting; that’s the highest level in the field. I love continuing my education, which is a good thing, since my certification requires it!
How long have you worked for Flow Science? Nearly five years now.
Why did you choose to come to work for Flow Science? It’s always about the money, baby. No, seriously (sort of), when I was doing my CPA internship, I learned that I would rather work in private industry than work doing audits and taxes for individuals. I found out that most people view going to see their CPA about the same as going to see their dentist – gotta get the pain over with fast!
Would you make the same decision again, knowing all you know about these folks now? I would make the same decision, not so much knowing what I know about these folks but what I know about myself now. I am a nerd; I should have embraced it back when I was in high school. The really nice thing about the folks I work with (all men except for Sally and me) is that they are such gentlemen. (Ed. Note: No money passed under the table for that last comment)
Does being in charge of writing the payroll checks give you any special leverage around here? Absolutely, positively no leverage whatsoever!
What is it that motivates you to get out of bed each morning? I have no problem getting up in the morning – it’s an automatic function for me. I love the morning. The question should be, what motivates me to stay up into the night? Not much; I’m usually in bed by 9:00 p.m.
Who was your greatest influence? My husband, by far, is the single most greatest influence because I admire and love him, and because I spend a lot of time with him. He’s influenced me to always continue to work at being a better person. Otherwise, I’ve been influenced by a lot of people along the way. Why? Because I’m easily influenced!
Looking back over your career, what accomplishments are you most proud of? I’ve been really proud of going to college full-time while working hard full-time, passing the exceptionally difficult CPA exam and doing the internship to get my license, all at mid-life. I’m also very happy that I accomplished extracting myself from working in the legal field, which I was born into, and which I find to be an extremely negative line of business. It’s much more fun keeping customers happy without anyone being hurt!
What is your favorite pastime? If it’s a sunshiny warmish winter day with no wind in the Rockies, I love to downhill ski. If it’s a sunshiny warmish winter day with wind in the Virgin Islands, I love to sail. Summertime in New Mexico, I like to swim anywhere outdoors and I tend to work out at the gym more. More than anything, I love the water. I am, after all, a Pisces (not that I give much thought to astrology). So why do I live in the high mountain desert of Santa Fe in the landlocked state of New Mexico? Maybe I’ll tell you about that another time.
