Spring 2001

Comings & Goings

We were dragging in May. Ernst Hansen from Trondheim, Norway was here as a visiting scientist. The drag Ernst introduced was that between oil and water in separators used to recover oil from the North Sea. His research has led to improvements in our drift-flux modeling.

Alexander Schmid came into the world on April 8, 2001 to the delight of his parents, Sabine and Markus Schmid. Markus now has something other than computer output to look at and admire.

We have always emphasized the maturity of our computer program as a positive attribute. Our staff seems to be achieving this quality as well, that is, if you count the number of grandparents on the staff. Ron Harper is the newest grand-dad with the birth of grand-daughter Carissa Janelle Summers on April 12th.

Helsinki University of Technology has solidly cast another masters of Science in Technology candidate. Mika Vartiainen finished his Masters thesis on "Flow and Solidification Simulation of Aluminum Low-Pressure Die Castings," in December, 2000. Congratulations Mika and to your supervisor, Prof. J.J. Vuorinen and instructor M. Sirvio.

Former member of our staff, Dr. John Richardson, has moved the course of his river from Earth Tech to Alden Research. We hope he continues his spillways and doing weird things.
