Letter from the Editor

We all know how important it is to make the "right" connections. This is particularly true when it comes to connecting materials together by gluing, soldering, welding or some other process. Connections are often the weakest link in the reliability or even the safety of objects we use every day such as electronic gear, automobiles, planes, boats, furniture, bridges, and building.

As manufacturers adopt new materials, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how to join them together in reliable ways. Joining often involves a combination of mechanical, thermal and chemical processes, so that almost any type of research that can reveal the details of these processes is likely to have far reaching consequences.

In this newsletter we have welded together several examples to connect with those of you interested in joining things.
