Sewer hydraulics, especially those that combine both pressurized and free-surface hydraulic conditions, represent an application area that is ideally suited to FLOW-3D‘s modeling strengths. The combined sewer overflow (CSO) problem that exists in thousands of older American cities, is a classic example where there is a need for CFD approaches that allow for seamless transitions between pressurized and free-surface hydraulic controls. In addition accurately capturing hydraulic jumps in pipes alongside air bubble entrapment and pressurization are a natural outcome of FLOW-3D simulations.
