Solving the World’s Toughest CFD Problems

Upcoming Webinars

Advanced Solutions for Collection Systems and Stormwater Hydraulics

March 28, 2024 | 1:00pm ET

Join us for a FLOW-3D HYDRO webinar focusing on practical solutions for collection systems and stormwater hydraulics using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In this technical webinar, we will go over several case studies that illustrate how CFD can be used to identify solutions, reduce cost and improve designs in collections systems and stormwater infrastructure. Samuel Glovick, Professional Engineer at Wade Trim, will join us to discuss how Wade Trim uses 3D CFD in conjunction with 1D and 2D hydraulic models to address complex problems in municipal and stormwater hydraulics.

Topics covered will include:

  • Combined Sewer
  • Overflows (CSOs)
  • Drop Structures
  • Energy Dissipators
  • Manholes and Geysering
  • Diversion Tanks and Overflows
  • Interceptors

Rock Scour Assessments for the Water Industry: A Methodology Using 2D/3D Fluid-Solid Numerical Coupling

Presented by the Australian Water School

May 29, 2024 | 8:00pm ET

Join our panel of expert presenters as they explore rock scour assessments in the water industry, including:

  • The risks associated with rock scour at water infrastructure;
  • Methods for estimating rock scour;
  • A numerical modelling approach including iterative fluid-solid coupling with 2D/3D CFD models;
  • A case study at an Australian dam.

We will also work through an example of how to use your local computer and cloud computing to perform a coupled fluid-solid rock scour analysis.

V8 Engine Block Sand Casting: Design Exploration of Runners, Risers and Chills through Flow and Solidification Simulations

April 18, 2024 | 1:00pm ET

A v8 engine block is a complex casting with several thick and thin-walled features. A large volume of metal alloy needs to be poured well to fill the entire casting and compensate for shrinkage of metal, eliminating defects and porosity in critical and stress tested areas of an engine block’s life cycle. The webinar aims to show an exploratory design process starting with the engine block thermal solidification analysis and various factors involved in designing a casting feeding and riser system.

We will cover relevant material such as:

  • Selecting casting orientation to fill
  • Choosing the best sprue-runner configuration to pour metal minimizing turbulence, entrained air and surface oxide defects
  • Riser placement and volume considering predicted shrinkage porosity and thermal modulus
  • Chill volumes and placement to alleviate hot spots and thermal management within sand mold and casting
  • Sprue cup and pouring criteria to represent realistic ladle or crucible metal transfer
  • Venting requirements and compressibility in sand molds for large and complex thick-thin-walled castings
