High Pressure Die Casting: Thermal Die Cycling

Thermal Die Cycling

Die cycling simulations are essential for high pressure die casting since the same die is used repeatedly to produce many thousands of castings. These simulations must provide accurate temperature distributions in a die through the duration of the process. With FLOW-3D the temperature distributions result from the combined effects of die heating (during filling and solidification), spraying and air blow-off (during the opening), and the location of cooling channels and inserts.

The figure shows the distribution of temperature in a die (H13 steel) at the end of the seventh cycle (note: a condition of quasi-equilibrium has been reached). Cooling channels are visible as cold spots on the die surface.
