Foundry: Solidification
The objective of simulating the solidification process is to predict and control defects such as segregation, thermally induced stresses, and micro and macro porosity, which, in turn, affect the mechanical properties of the cast product.
Shown below is the cooling of an aluminum engine block, colored by percentage
of solidified metal.
